What Are Peptides?

A peptide is a short chain of amino acids — the same building blocks that make up proteins, joined in a shorter sequence. That one plain fact covers collagen powder in a supermarket, insulin in a pharmacy, and compounds sold online that no regulator has cleared for human use.

The word describes a molecule's shape, not its safety, its legality, or whether it works. A prescription medicine, a supermarket supplement and an unapproved research chemical can all correctly be called peptides.

That last sentence is the reason this page exists.

"Peptide" is doing an enormous amount of work in online health conversation, and almost none of it is chemical. It has become a category people shop in. But the word is closer to "liquid" than it is to "antibiotic" — it tells you about structure, and nothing whatsoever about what the thing does to a body or what a regulator has said about it.

The actual chemistry, briefly

Amino acids link together in chains. A short chain is a peptide; a long, folded one is a protein. The dividing line is a convention rather than a law of nature — most references put it somewhere around 50 amino acids.

What matters more than the length is the sequence. The order of the amino acids determines the shape the chain folds into, and the shape determines what it can bind to in the body. Two peptides of identical length can do entirely unrelated things.

This is also why peptides are usually injected rather than swallowed. The digestive system breaks protein down into its component amino acids — that is its job. A peptide taken orally is, in most cases, digested into fragments before it can act. The exceptions are engineered, and the engineering is the hard part.

Three completely different things get called peptides

The single most useful thing a reader can learn about this topic is that the category contains three regulatory classes that have nothing in common except chemistry.

1. Approved medicines

Some peptides are prescription drugs that have been through the full FDA approval process: evidence reviewed for a specific use, in a specific population, at a specific dose, with the manufacturing facility inspected. Insulin is a peptide. So are the GLP-1 medicines that have dominated the last few years of health news.

For these, there is a public record of what was tested and what was found.

2. Food and supplement ingredients

Collagen peptides sold as a powder are regulated as food, not as drugs. Dietary supplements do not require FDA approval before sale. The manufacturer is responsible for their safety and for the truth of their labelling, and the FDA generally acts after a product is already on the market.

This is not a loophole — it is the correct category for a food ingredient. But it means "you can buy it in a shop" carries no information about clinical effect.

3. Compounds with no approved human use

A third group is neither an approved medicine nor a food. These are compounds sold for "research use only", or prepared by compounding pharmacies, or bought from overseas suppliers. Some have real preclinical literature behind them. Some have almost nothing.

What they share is the absence of the thing the first group has: no regulator has reviewed evidence for a specific human use and concluded the benefits outweigh the risks.

Why the label matters more than it looks

The three classes above are frequently discussed in the same sentence, on the same forum, by people using the same word. A reader who has just learned that semaglutide is a peptide, and that it works, has been handed a false generalisation about every other compound in the category.

Two distinctions do most of the work, and this site returns to them constantly:

  • Compounding is not approval. A compounded preparation arrives with a prescription, from a pharmacy, in medical packaging. The FDA has not reviewed that specific product for safety, effectiveness or quality.
  • FDA status is not anti-doping status. They are separate systems asking separate questions. A compound can be legal to possess and still prohibited in sport, and an approved medicine can be banned in competition.

What "the evidence" means here

When this site says a compound has evidence behind it, we say what kind, because the three kinds are not interchangeable:

  • Anecdote — someone reported an effect. Useful for generating a question; worthless for answering one.
  • Preclinical — cell cultures or animal studies. Genuinely informative about mechanism, and a poor predictor of what happens in people. Most compounds that look promising here never work out.
  • Clinical — trials in humans, with the size, design and endpoints stated.

Conflating those three is the specific failure this publication exists to correct. A compound with striking rat data and no human trials is not "backed by science" in the way a reader will hear that phrase.
